Preventing a gap in a ring

Postby tundraman » June 20th, 2012, 6:27 pm

All rings have a tendancy for the pin to hang when closing. This is what I do to all my rings.
The pin needs to be snug when closed to maintain proper alignment.
So This tapering is only taking place at the tip and top third of the pin.
Use a regular fine file to elongate the taper on the side away from the center of the WMC.
Then using the fine emery fingernail buffer smooth and polish the taper and on the inside side of the pin the whole length.
This makes all the surfaces that can hang in the hole very smooth and hang up proof.
Remove as little material as you can from the pin side to smooth it or it will fit too loose in the hole.

You can see the wear pattern/ ss buildup on the buffer from polishing pins.
I get the foam core buffers from a beauty supply store.

A good hint Chuck. I have noticed two of my WMCs suffer from this. Could Dave take it up with his supplier?

Hi CoastGuard,
Very sorry to learn you had a problem with rings, but please note we can only find a record of you having bought one WMC ring from us. If you have a problem with any ring we want to hear about it so we can fix it.

Hi Dave, thanks for that, I thought I'd got the others from you as well, but obviously not. The 28mmID x 30mm is superb, but if I'm hot, and it's on the tight side and will cause pain after 15 - 20 mins, so I've made up some packing pieces from Plastikard (anyone into model railwaying will be well acquainted with PK) 80 thou" and 40 thou" inch which I use then, so it's no problem. You can easily them bigger, but you can't make them smaller ver easily. The "Ringmaster" type I've got, I lined with some leather stuck on with Evo Stick contact adhesive to reduce the ID, but with the extra weight would still pull through occasionally which is why I bought the smaller ID "WMC" type.

Well that's good to hear CoastGuard! The perfect one is from secretleather since we only sold you a 30mm x 28mm ID and the other sub standard ones are from someone else. We really do care about quality and stand by what we sell.

Jon, Dave will want to know if any of them are using his copywrited : " WMC " or "Worlds Most Comfortable" anywhere in describing their product.
